Thursday May 24th

11s- Today we looked at the way that the arrangement of words of poetry on the page can enhance and affect meaning.  Students completed a survey with Ms. Chen, and students had some time to prepare for Monday's Literature Circle Meeting.

Students should know what their job/role is and which pages to read for next day.  Remember that your ticket into your group is your prep work.

You will be handing in your writing for meetings #1 and #2 on Monday.

***NEW MARKS POSTED!!! Please double check that all the numbers I have entered are correct

10s- Today we looked at a very particular form of poetry...sonnets.  We learned about iambic pentameter, octaves, sestets....There will be a poetry unit test on Monday - study your poetic terms and make sure you're comfortable with TPCASTT analysis.

TPCASTT of "War is Kind" should now be handed in...

Tuesday May 22nd

11s-  Today was the first in our series of four Literature Circle meetings.  Groups did a great job (for the most part) of running discussion groups.  It was wonderful to hear all the meaningful responses that students shared with each other.  Keep it up, we're here to help each other!

Next meeting is Monday May 28th - you should know which pages to read and what to prepare.  Keep in mind that you need to rotate the jobs/responsibilities...so don't do the same job twice.

10s- Today we took another look at poetic devices...use this as a study tool for the Provincial.  We completed a close reading of two new poems: "King of Pain" and "The Quiet Room" which are both great examples of catharsis in poetry...

Returned - poetic devices quiz, journals

Homework: TPCASTT "War is Kind", study for Poetry Unit test MON MAY 28th (will cover poetic devices and poem interpretation)

Wed May 16th

11s- Today we got going with Literature Circles.  Jobs were explained and dished out, meeting times were set, and group members began to work together.

Everybody should know what pages to read and what they are responsible for.  No preparation = no group discussion.  Your prep work is your ticket in next day.

Lit Circle Meeting dates are:
1.  Tuesday May 22nd
2.  Monday May 28th
3.  Friday June 1st
4.  Thursday June 7th

These dates are very important - if you are not here you will not be able to contribute and learn with your peers.  This will negatively affect your mark.

Can't wait for Tuesday!  Have a great weekend!

10s- Today we spent some time viewing and talking about spoken word poetry.  We also wrote and marked quizzes.

Homework- Read your independent novel!

Monday May 14th

11s-  Hurray!  We're working together again...it has been an interesting process for me to be in the passenger seat and watch you work with Ms. Johnson...it's great to be back, I've missed you.

Today we launched into something completely new.  We will be working in Literature Circle groups for the next month and so today was the beginning of that process.  I've put you into your groups, apologies, you definitely did not ALL get your first/second choices.  The groups look great though!  You all made some interesting choices, I can't wait to get started.

Term 3 Reading Goal check-ins today - only one more to go.  Where are you at with your reading? We also conducted a practice lit circle session.

10s - As hinted at last week there will be a quiz on WED MAY 16th on the poetic terms worksheet we've been working with for the last few weeks.  You will definitely want to make sure that you are familiar with all the terms/types of poems (so front and back of sheet will be covered on the quiz).  The quiz is 16 marks and will only take you 10-15 minutes to complete.  If you don't bother to study it will be difficult.  So study.

"Richard Cory" - we completed a proper TPCASTT.

Poetry and politics - Gemma talked about the turbulence in Ireland and we looked through two poetic responses.  "Soldier" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday".

Provincially speaking... www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/

Poetry - we looked through a few poems today - key question - what effect do poetic devices hae?

Song Analysis - students were asked to bring in song lyrics and mark up the text.  Today students continued to look at their lyrics.  Students were to submit a paragraph response about their song.
